The Pakistan Bedwear Exporters Association (PBEA) has asked the incoming government to close down the ministry of textile industry and revert its powers to the ministry of commerce.
In a statement issued by PBEA on Tuesday, the body said that the ministry of textile industry was doomed to be a non-performing small unit without any authority in the government. It was created to meet political ends rather than pursue economic or trade needs, it added.
The statement further said that the ministry has served the purpose of accommodating some blue-eyed politician and unwanted federal secretaries. It was never an effective part of the any economic policy decision-making process, including the trade policy. It had no part in matters relating to exports, which remained an exclusive domain of the commerce division, it said.
“It did come out with a textile policy which was a bag full of tall promises and lofty goals. Apparently the ministry had a pipe dream, totally bereft of reality. The ill-conceived policy was a failure,” Shabir Ahmed, former chairman of the Association said in the statement.
