Bangladesh Needs To Do More To Improve Working Condition In RMG Sector

The visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, Karen Hanrahan, said Sunday that Bangladesh made a lot for improving working conditions of readymade garment (RMG) workers and more needs to be done.

"The country has taken a lot of initiatives to improve the working condition. There has been significant improvement of working condition. We have to go a long way. All should be working together and figure out how to address the issues in days to come," she told on Labour Rights issues at the US-Bangladesh Partnership Dialogue: Private Sector Forum" at the DCCI on the day.

Former president of DCCI Asif Ibrahim who co-chaired the session said that the buyers, owners and workers should work together to improve the working condition of labourers.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Trade Union Centre (BTUC) Dr Wajedul Islam Khan in his presentation, suggested formation of sufficient labour courts and minimum wage board, establishment of labour inspection office in all industrial belts, strengthening labour inspection department with sufficient human resources and equipment,

safety committees in all factories, formulation of national safety plan, upholding and protecting trade union rights, developing the bipartite and tripartite structure, ensuring social security for all and mind set to accept that labourer is the integral part of development.

Senior Adviser on Business and Human Rights of GAP Inc Darryl Knudsen said, "We morally support the fire safety accord, but we can't sign an agreement since it is legally binding. Our (GAP) business with Bangladesh will continue".

General Secretary of Jatiya Sramik League Roy Ramesh Chandra said the Rana Plaza building collapse was an industrial homicide and it has created a negative image crisis for Bangladesh and there should be a safe working place.

"We want a safe working place. The global brands should not deny their responsibility for ensuring workers safety," he said and suggested to pay for improving living standard of the workers so that they could lead a decent life with their family members.

He called upon the US not to scrap generalised system of preferences (GSP) for the interest of welfare of poor workers.

Secretary General of Bangladesh Employers Federation Farooq Ahmed, Director of DCCI Osama Taser, former ambassador Humayun Kabir and former senior vice-president of DCCI Sakil Chowdhury, among others, took part in the discussion.

Meanwhile at the inaugural session on the day at DCCI, the US Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs Jose Fernandez said the bilateral trade growth between Bangladesh and US has increased 11 per cent over the last years.

"The relations between Bangladesh and US are excellent. Bangladesh has the potential for US entrepreneurs to invest in the pharmaceuticals, energy and infrastructure sectors. We have an opportunity to increase our bilateral trade. We need to look at how the business community of the two countries work together for mutual benefits," he said.

DCCI President Md Sabur Khan called upon the US to help Bangladesh achieve its national goal of transforming it into a middle income country from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) status through diversified and innovative economy, build capacity in the rule of laws and regulatory issues including workplace health and safety and enhance job creation by more American investment in power, gas and energy and communication system to build our national infrastructure.

Vice-Chairman of Financial Excellence Limited Mamun Rasid in his keynote paper said Bangladesh exported goods to US worth US$5100.91 million and imported $705.06 million during the fiscal year (FY) 2011-12.

Member of Bangladesh Tariff Commission Dr Mostofa Abid Khan said "We must have a greater interaction and duty free and quota free market access of Bangladeshi products to US market for increasing bilateral trade and investment".
