TAPPI Centennial Celebration Week to Feature Programming
from all Industry Segments

ATLANTA, Ga., TAPPI’s Centennial Celebration Week, April 18-25 in Atlanta, will bring together members from around the world for a week of special programming, special events and celebrations. Co-located with PaperCon, the programming, provided by various TAPPI divisions, combines the latest technology from multiple industry segments and demonstrates the strong bonds between each step in the supply chain in the pulp, papermaking, plastics (and laminates), corrugated and nanotechnology industries.
Monday, April 20:

From TAPPI’s Pulp Manufacturing Division:

Raw Materials Used in Pulping/Papermaking

Session Chair is Ricardo Santos of MWV, and presentations will include: Impact of Wood Species Upon Papermaking (Alan Rudie, US Forest Products Lab); Advances in Eucalyptus Species (Peter Hart, MWV); and Nonwood Fibers – Opportunities and Challenges for Papermakers (Robert Hurter, Hurter Consult Inc.).

From the joint session with Papermaking Additives:

The Impact of Pulp Mill Operations on Papermaking

Session Chair is Peter Hart of MWV, and presentations will include: Strength Variations - Causes, Troubleshooting the Pulp Mill vs. Paper Mill (Mike Kocurek); Carryover I: Black Liquor, Defoamers, Dirt, Shives, etc.; Strategies to Minimize (Ricardo Santos, MWV); and Carryover II: Anionic Trash and Effects on Wet End Chemistry (David Jones, Buckman)

From TAPPI’s PLACE Division:

Overview of Paperboard Extrusion Coating Technology

Presentations include: An Overview of Paper Board Extrusion Coating & Laminating (Kelly Frey, Chevron Phillips); Primer Coatings on Paperboard for Extrusion Coating and Heat Sealing Applications (Rob Hammond, MICA Corporation); Die and Feedblock Technology in Paperboard Extrusion Coating (Christine Ronaghan, Cloeren).

Trends in Paper and Extrusion Coating

Presentations include: Understanding Coated Paper Properties for Extrusion Coaters (Femi Kotoye, Trinseo); How The Web Was Lost: Case Studies of 35 Years of Paper Replacement by Plastic Films (Tom Dunn , Flexpacknology LLC); and Aluminum Foil and Extrusion Coating - Latest News about an Old Couple from the Old World (Guenter Schubert, Hydro Aluminum Rolled Products GmbH)

From TAPPI’s Corrugated Division:

Technical Trends Affecting Packaging Now and in the Future

Presented by Stephen Shannon, US Sales Manager Strategic Accounts with Industrial Packaging Solutions. In addition, Hewlett-Packard Company will engage the audience in a presentation on how technology will affect consumer buying trends in the future, and how packaging will adjust to these new demands.

The Boxplant of the Future

A look at what the boxplant of the future might look like in relation to three main categories: Corrugators, Converting and Substrates. Teams from multiple companies were interviewed to get their perspective on what might be possible in the next 45 years and these “pie in the sky” predictions will be presented by an impartial speaker.

Wednesday, April 22:

From TAPPI’s Nanotechnology Division:

Fiber Based Additives

Chaired by Sean Ireland of Verso Paper Corporation, presentations will include: Research, Development, Scale-up and Production of Microfibrillated Cellulose/ Mineral Composite Materials for Paper and Board Applications (David Skuse, Imerys) and Pigmented Micro- Nano-Fibrillated Cellulose (MNFC) as Packaging Composite Material: a First Assessment (Michel Schenker).

In addition, the highlight of TAPPI’s 100 year anniversary, will be the Centennial Celebration Gala Dinner on April 20. Beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Atlanta Convention Center, America’s Mart, the Gala will feature a night of socializing and entertainment as we celebrate the past, present and future potential of the global pulp, paper, packaging, tissue and related industries.
